Is It Time To Take Your Career to the Next Level?

Is it time to take your career to the next level

Thinking about the time when we were little girls, we always had a vision of what we wanted to be when we got older. At the age of 5, Brittany wanted to be a doctor, and Ashley wanted to work at a Grocery Store . At the age of 10, Brittany wanted to be a talk show host, and Ashley wanted to be a Scientist. When we were 18, Brittany wanted to work for Nike as a marketer, and Ashley wanted to be an accountant. One thing we had in common with all those ages and determining our careers was we always wanted change. Our interests always changed and we always wanted more.

In our past career, we felt stuck and stagnant. We knew we wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, but we felt we weren’t growing to reach our goal of doing just that. When we graduated college, we got started in the banking industry and we learned a thing or two when it came to knowing when it was time to level up and move on in our careers. We worked our way up from a Teller, to a Lead Teller, to a Personal Banker, to a Licensed Banker. We always wanted more for ourselves. How do you know when it is time to take your career to the next level you ask? Here are some ways that we knew it was time to take our career to the next level:

1.) You don’t fit in with the culture

Always remember when you’re going on an interview for a company, you are also interviewing them. You are the prize and you are bringing your strengths and assets to THEIR company. You have to make sure your values lines up with theirs. If you want a company that has a good work life balance, and the company you interview for has absolutely NO WORK LIFE BALANCE, then it is time to go somewhere else. Also, if the company has you doing some shady stuff, and it doesn’t line up with your integrity, it’s time for a change.

2.) There is no room for growth

It says something when you’re at a company and there is absolutely no room for growth or promotions. The goal is always to sharpen your skills, gain new experience, and to take on more challenges and if your job or employer is not providing that for you, now is the time to start looking else where.

3.) It is time to acquire new skills

Get out there in this big world and gain some new skills and experience! You can read all the books in the world, and having all the knowledge in your head, but if you can’t get out in the world and put your experience to the test, you won’t be able to acquire those new skills and those new experiences. Most of the time, employers will take on someone with the most experience rather than someone with the most education. Get all the experience you can and be great!

“You cannot learn how to ride a bicycle by reading a book. The only way you can acquire that skill is to hop on the bicycle and learn to ride it”- Robert Kiyosaki

4.) You’re not feeling challenged and you would like more responsibility

If you feel like your position currently is not helping you grow in the company, then now is the perfect time to take your career to the next level. You can ask your manager for more challenging projects with more responsibility but if your manager cannot provide that to you, it’s time to start a new journey in your career. The goal in your career is to grow and flourish, not hold yourself back by being bored and hindered.

5.) Your pay/salary has been the same for the past 3 years

This is something that we learned the hard way. Being at the same company for 4 years, we never received a raise at all. Brittany’s manager actually told her “in order to keep up with other bankers in the industry, you have to leave and come back to make what a new employee (banker) would be making coming in”. Glassdoor helped us to see if we were competitive with other bankers in the area. Not only that, this site can help you negotiate your salary. This is how we knew it was time to move on to something better.

6.) You’re not utilizing your talents, strengths and skills to the best of your ability

Is time to take your career to the next level

Do something that you are absolutely good at. Take advantage of your talents! Don’t just settle in a career because the pay is absolutely amazing. Yes, money is always great BUT if you are unhappy and the work you do means absolutely nothing, then it is time to change your career path.

7.) You don’t look forward to going to work

Do something that makes your heart come alive! You want to have a purpose and great passion to do something you love every single day! If you dread going to work, then this is definitely time to take your career to the next level. Don’t waste 10 hours or more a day on work that does not make you happy. That’s the best piece of advice we can give when it comes to your career. You do the absolute best work when your heart is in it.

8.) Your manager does not value you and does not want you to succeed

There are some bosses that hold their best employees back because it makes the boss look good. If you have a boss that holds you back in every way possible, it is time to chuck up the peace sign. Work for a boss that wants the best for you and sees the potential and talent in you.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. —John Quincy Adams

9.) You’re ashamed of your company and you don’t get excited to talk about it

Be proud to work for a company! When you are not proud when someone asks you “what do you do or who do you work for?” then it is time to move on. You want to be the biggest cheerleader for the company you work for. When you always talk negatively about your company or your ashamed to say what you do, then that’s a red flag. If you can’t convince yourself and get excited for your company, how is a customer or another employee going to do the same?

10.) You can’t be your true self

Is it time to take your career to the next level?

If you are normally a high energetic, optimistic person and you can’t be who you are because people will judge you because you are always too happy, then it is really time to move on. Don’t hold in who you really are to make your manager, your co workers or your company happy. Your goal is to be happy and if you’re hiding who you really are, it’s time to say bye, bye, bye.

11.) You don’t see yourself there long term

If you can’t see yourself there for more than one year, then it’s time to envision your career somewhere else.

Are there any other ways to tell that it may be time to move on to something bigger and better, we would love to hear it!

Remember, the goal is to always level up with your skills, talents and experiences. Embrace change and don’t be scared to try something new.
